VECTORS 2
INTRODUCTION
The main idea behind the experiment was to help students attain a clear understanding of vector
addition. Force tables were used to achieve the experimental purpose. Both the graphical and
analytical methods of vector addition were used. The concept of vectors addition is widely applied
in scientific areas: - A good example being forces acting on a boat crossing the river. The addition
of forces acting on the boat creates a motion to the boat.
PROCEDURE
The experiment involved tests such as sensitivity of the instrument, symmetric arrangement,
and the vector components. In the first test, two pulleys and two pans were used at angles of
0 degrees and 180 degrees. Masses of 50 grams were used in pans 1 and 2 to test the
sensitivity. The maximum mass was found for both pans through checking equilibrium.
In experiment 2, two initial mass and directions were used. The respective masses and direction
picked were recorded. During the third experiment, the vector components were recorded. A pin
on the force table was used in this case, with a 50-gram mass hanging from the pan. The pan
angle was set at 35 degrees. Its force was recorded as F1. The x and y components of the force
were analytically calculated. In experiment 4, vector direction for all forces used were recorded.
DATA/CALCULATIONS/QUESTIONS
Tension
Tension T1= M*g
T= (50+20)*9.81
= 486 Newtons, equivalent to= 0.486 g
