Building relationships before you need them
Project manager is supposed to make the teams work together, to achieve the
common project’s objectives and goal. There should be an element of harmony between the
human capitals, even before the human capital is active in the project. Considering a
marketing project, I might need mass media professionals, for instance, a paparazzi, and a
model, say a musician. I should be in touch with this people, and should always keep them
close, so that any time I need them, they will avail selves without resistance. Secondly, a
habit develops a culture. If I learn how to relate with the team before it is active in the
project, I will be able to relate with the same team during the project with ease; having known
them better earlier (Kerzner, 2013)
My experience presents a case where I failed for not relating early enough. Some
times last year we had a family gathering at home. I was on vacation, and the family held me
responsible for the occasion. I took the challenge to sharpen my management skills. The
guests were from the expanded family, and due to distance, I knew little about them. So I
place my budget, sorted all mills, and snacks, considered children and brought in balloons
and other entertainment tools for children. I did not consult in budgeting. After the meeting
had begun, I learned that three cousins and their father were vegetarians! There was no such
arrangement in my budget. Also, children were not to be included, and the meeting was just
to inculcate the adults only. The children’s budget went to waste! If I had talked to them
before hand, I could have gathered some of this information early enough.
Important traits in a project manager
Among other personal traits, project managers should be cool under pressure,
enthusiastic, know how to build teams, be good in communicating, inspire the shared vision
et al. The two most important, in my view, are team building skills and control of
