Multiculturalism entails the convergence of different people from different places and
with different cultures and believes to form one people. It entails promoting different cultural
practices within a single jurisdiction. This is unlike the American definition of definition of
multiculturalism which means assimilation of other groups into the base culture which in this
case is the American culture as stated in Ethel Walker’s article.
As discussed in the article Theatre is an important platform for promoting
multiculturalism and diversity. It has however failed in this role. American theatre has
discriminated against African -American scripts citing small incapacities like heavy melodrama.
This has greatly contributed in the disunity of various cultures and races (Walker, 1994).
Educational institutions have been tasked with unifying students and workers from
various cultural and racial affiliations and they have constantly set missions and visions of
ensuring cultural diversity are upheld. They have however failed in their task as in most cases the
institution’s outlook does not reflect diversity from the managerial and technical positions that
are held by a specific genders and groups of people.
It is however possible to make multiculturalism a reality. This can be done by going
beyond the stage in theatres to the real world where directors and producers should be sensitized
on the importance of observing multiculturalism. This should be done in accessing scripts, and
ensuring there is fairness in choosing characters to act in a script (Walker, 1994). They should
work to ensure that the stories of different people are seen and heard by immersing different
cultures in theatre.
It is quiet unfortunate that learning institutions have not been able to achieve the
multiculturalism goal but there is always a way of making this happen. This is a debatable issue
that should be taken beyond the classroom level. It should entail providing classes for different
