PERCEPTION AND SENSATION 2
Sensation is a process in which the stimulation from sensory receptors which results in
production of neural impulses which the brain then interprets by use of the five sensory organs as
taste, odor, pain or any other form of sensation. Sensation occurs when sensory organs absorb
energy usually from the physical stimulus of the surroundings. The sensory receptors are
responsible for conversion of the absorbed energy to neural impulses and send them to the brain
for interpretation. Perception on the other hand goes ahead to be the process in which the brain
arranges and translates the sent impulses into something that can be attached to a particular
meaning. This means that the perception goes ahead and tries to rationalize all the information
that has been gathered by the sensory organs into something that makes sense. Perception acts as
the recipient of the information and then how the reception is done, the meaning is then adduced
(Heller-Roazen, 2007). It must however be said that perception and sensation are two processes
that work hand in hand, by complimenting each other.
Evolution is a process that has been summarily been defined as the ability in which one moves
from the simple to the more complex forms. This means that evolution is applicable to the
sensory and perceptual processes. The importance of evolution to these two processes is the fact
that the environment in itself is evolving. This means that human beings have an obligation to
adapt if they have to survive in the environment (Grdenfors, 2006). Sensory and perceptual
processes have to be within the demands of the environment and there is no question as this
would be vital to make the human beings to be the masters of nature as was clearly intended in
the first place.
The fact that at times a person loses one of the ability to use one of the sensory organs can be
challenging. There is however the fact that evolution plays a large role in ensuring that such
persons become adapted to their environment with the existing condition. For instance, it has
