Resource trap
The main argument is the fact that resource-rich nations may remain poor because of the
economy, rent, and politics among other things. Another argument made by the author is that
resource surplus in countries does not guarantee them safety but rather messes up politics.
Finally, not all countries that have natural resources in abundance are unable to enjoy economic
development because of the waste of money involved.
The author uses the term natural resource trap to explain the notion that in as much as a
country, many have numerous resources; it may still experience in poverty. According to the
author, having natural resources in abundance may not necessarily mean that a nation will enjoy
economic prosperity. The first way in which communities are trapped is in the balance between
the economic boom and crash. In as much as countries may experience an economic boom, they
should realize that a crash is inevitable. Secondly, countries are trapped between politics,
democracy, and growth. Most of the resource-rich countries that are politically unstable may be
unable to succeed thus experience some trap. Finally, countries are trapped between balancing
their exports and imports because the two are related. Failure to concentrate on one may lead to
economic failure of a nation.
