Plato’s ideas on democracy 2
Examination of Plato’s ideas on democracy and their application to today’s American democracy
or democracies around the world.
Abstract
The idea of freedom emanated long before modern societies could be formed.
Democracy, as viewed in the contemporary society, may have variations from the same as was
viewed in the traditional society. However, both versions share some characteristics as evident
through the analysis of Democracy as considered by Plato. Plato was a Greek philosopher who
dwelled on the work of his predecessor Socrates (Steven & Mills, 2015). By analysis of the ideas
of Plato on Democracy, we will be able to understand his stand on this issue and how his
position could be beneficial to the current American democracy. The analysis will aim to find
ideas from his argument which we can follow and criticize those which appear unclear or unable
to work for the current American democracy. This move will give us a clear understanding of his
ideas on this issue.
