IRAQ’S WEAPONS OF MASS DESTRUCTION PROGRAMS 2
Evidence that Iraq was Producing Weapons of Mass Destruction
After a long tussle with the United Nations, it was finally proven that Iraq was making
weapons of mass destruction. The first evidence was the fact that Baghdad was the main
center used to manufacture these weapons from the investigations conducted by the CIA in
liaison with the United Nations (United Nations Security Council Resolutions on Iraq, 2007).
When Iraq was asked to declare her Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) programs under
the supervision of UN or IAEA, she refused. Instead, she just gave room for partial inspection
while vehemently denying of the programs and obstructing the inspectors (Weapons of Mass
Destruction Programs, CIA Intelligence Report, 2007).
There was also evidence that she was using unmanned Aerial vehicles and she also made
weapons with ranges greater than the stipulated 150kms by UN. The UAV's were being used
to carry biological or chemical weapons to ranges further than the stipulated distance.
Thirdly, Iraq was required to allow the UN to inspect any of her weaponry programs at free
will if they had nothing to hide. They were required not to conceal any information regarding
WMD as well as ceasing any more manufacturing of the weapons. Instead, the Iraqi
authorities ensured that they delayed the inspections, restricted some, especially around
Baghdad. In fact, the UNSCOM and IAEA were given very limited permission in areas that
Iraqi authorities deemed fit to be inspected (United Nations Security Council Resolutions on
Iraq, 2007).
Moreover, after frustrating UN's efforts to inspect her WMD programs, Iraq was
speculated to be conducting a nuclear program. Investigations showed that she procured high-
strength aluminum tubes which were speculated to be for nuclear purposes (Weapons of
Mass Destruction Programs, CIA Intelligence Report, 2007). She also withheld important
details on nuclear programs and her illicit oil market enabled her to finance her nuclear
