Guidance and Coaching in Practice Nursing.

Guidance and coaching Is a central aspect in advanced practice nursing as it goes beyond

directing and empowering patients. Guidance, refers to the process of counselling a patient

through directing, advising or rather leading a patient. It is done by a registered nurse. Guidance

can also be referred to as teaching that is according to (Hamric, 2014). This process normally

take place through conversations between the registered nurse and the patient during the pre and

post tests. On the other hand coaching is the act of giving confidence to the patients so that they

may be in a state of managing their self-care demands at individual level. Hamric refers to

coaching as a patient education, because it involves learning to make decisions, solve problems

as well as gaining confidence in self-care. Here, we are going to have a look at Guidance and

Coaching in advanced practice nursing and how it differs from the registered nurse role in

teaching or coaching as well as showing its competency level.

Guidance being something that the nurse does, coaching involves empowering the

patients so as to be in a state of managing their health needs. Both aspects (coaching and

guidance) are of essence in combination as guidance helps in creating awareness, sustaining

behavioral change and managing the illness situation of the patient while coaching empowers the

patient. This two combination is only present in the advanced practice nursing while in the

registered nurse practice, the nurse is only expected to administer coaching and maybe out of
