VIRTUAL TEAM MANAGEMENT
Virtual team management describes a geographically detached group of people working
towards common objectives and goals (DuFrene, Lehman, & Business Expert Press, 2012). The
teams are connected through electronic communications, which include email, voice, and video
conferencing as well as FAX. The virtual team members may or may never meet during their
association lifetime. Virtual teams may be a great tool to enhance teamwork even among people
from different geographical locations (Cameron & Green, 2015). These teams have significant
benefits in cutting down business expenses associated with the placement of the members.
Besides these advantages, the teams are faced with different challenges related to the nature of
their existence. Below are some of the challenges as well as the shortcomings of virtual teams.
The separation between the team members creates a barrier to problem solving and the
success of some projects. It turns hard to manage conflicts and build trust among members who
do not physically know one another or members who lack the ability to meet one another. Trust
is vital to enhance constructive communication between the team members as well as sustain the
motivation of each of the individuals involved. The success and effectiveness of a virtual team
highly depend on the type of the project and the organization of the team (Cameron & Green,
2015). Not all projects can be successful in the virtual organization. For instance, highly
sequential and integrated unit projects cannot perform with virtual teams. These projects need a
close communication and bond between the team members and this lacks in virtual
organizations. Most of their team members’ tasks depend on other team members' tasks and thus
a massive exchange between the team members and their leaders. This requirement limits the
applicability of virtual organizations.
