Introduction
Addiction is caused by a series of conditions. Addiction refers to an action which an
individual performs for pleasure or economic reasons but the action ends up controlling the
individual and forces him to adopt that particular lifestyle

. These actions include gambling, drug
abuse as well as sex. This results to that particular individual being unable to live without that
particular substance or action. The process of addiction is often viewed by many individuals in the
field of health as a biological process. These experts view the addiction as an inborn process that
occurs due to the genetic factors on the part of the addicted individual. They believe that an
individual’s biology will interact with the environmental factors and this will lead to addiction in
most cases. However, recent studies have proved that apart from biological causes being the key
cause of addiction, social factors have played a great part in this process. However, genetic causes
remain to be the greatest concern in dealing with addiction

. Experts in the field of medicine have
started using a different approach to view addiction. Some of them have ventured into intensive
research to identify whether behavior of an individual or a group of individuals can actually
influence the development of this disorder.
This approaches gives us with a better view of the role of an individual in the process of
addiction. Among many approaches that have come into place as a result of this study include the
Bandura’s social learning theory, Pavlov’s classical conditioning, as well as Skinner’s operant
conditioning. This approaches enables us to identify and understand the development of this
disorders.
Behavior approaches can be used to study and understand the concept of addiction.
