PERFORMANCE AND SITUATION AWARENESS 2
Performance and Situation Awareness
Introduction
Technological development has enabled the development of the systems that automate
cognitively complex functions, although, the evaluation of such systems have failed to show
consistent results. In some of the studies, the performance and situation awareness has been
seen to decrease whereas to some it is increasing. The cause of this variations could be the
difference in cognitive profiles of the participants. This inconsistency causes the differences
in information processing ability and working memory capacity. This article reflects more on
levels of automation and situation awareness.
Levels of automation
Automation is applied in four broad categories. (1) Information acquisition. (2)
Analysis of the information. (3) Decision selection. (4) Action implementation, there is the
low level where decision selection, the moderate level that suggests one action and finally
high level may decide on what to do independent of the user. Situation awareness involves
the perception of relevant information from the environment, comprehension of the current
situation and projection of the situation in the near future. Situation awareness is important in
understanding and predicting the human reactions (Parasuraman & Wickens 2008). When a
meta-analysis was carried out to investigate higher LOAs, the results showed that it can result
in inconsistent patterns of changes in the performance as well as situation awareness.
