Week 1 DQ 2: What is the five-step process for hypothesis testing? Is the order
important? Why or why not? What is the difference between the null and alternative
hypotheses statements in one-tailed and two-tailed tests? How is hypothesis testing
utilized for business research?
The five step process for hypothesis testing is as follows:
Step 1
Specify the null and alternative hypotheses – the first step in the hypothesis testing is to
establish whether it is null hypothesis or alternative hypothesis. To determine this, null
hypothesis (Ho) in the hypothesis testing is usually consist of an equality in which it includes
one of the status quo or no distinction. Alternative hypothesis (H1 or Ha) is considered the
opposed hypothesis of null representing the conclusion if the null were to be rejected.
Step 2
Specification of the level of significance- is the level of confident selected when
determining which values are important. However, in this situation, .01 and .05 are usually the
most favored levels. The level chosen will be determined by how confident the findings will turn
out to be.
Step 3
Calculation of the test statistic –test statistic is to evaluate the sample mean with the
hypothesized mean in which it comprised of calculation for Z and T statistics. The test statistic
is usually determined whether it is Z or T by knowing the sample size.
Step 4
Definition of the region rejection – step 4 is to compare two values to determine the
condition of the decision rule.
Step 5
Selection of the appropriate hypothesis - in this step, if the calculated value of the test
statistic is greater than the critical value then the null hypothesis is automatically rejected. If the
null hypothesis is rejected than the result is considered significant, vice versa.
The order of the five steps goes accordingly to the step by step procedure. If the steps
are to be mixed up then outcome of the hypothesis testing will be a complicated one to
evaluate. I would speculate the testing will not flow effortlessly but rather a broken piece of
equipment that has not been put together correctly.
