Chinese College Students Changing the World
Chinese immigrants and Chinese born in the United States have faced many challenges
over the years. As a minority group, they have often been discriminated against, prejudiced,
stereotyped, labelled and generalized. Unfortunately, their push for equality and recognition
often leads to violence that leaves them with injuries or death. Harvey Dong tells his story to
demonstrate the impacts the history of American treatment of Chinese Immigrants has had on
current generations. The Exclusion Act saw many Chinese males enter the US as paper sons.
When one considers the importance the Chinese and general Asian culture attaches to family,
one gets a deeper understanding of the need for immigrants to immigrate to the extent that they
devised such methods. Asians willingly came to the US to support Chinese-Americans in their
struggles (Changing the World, 130). After the Second World War, America sold an image of
success and good life to the rest of the world to cement its place as a superpower. However, it
did not highlight the shortcomings in its systems that create inequality and perpetuate racism
(Changing the World, 126). Chapter five notes the struggles that Chinese immigrants had to face
over the decades.
One significant challenge is that despite the immense experiences the community had in
America, they were not taught to their future generations. The lack of Asian Studies meant most
of the history of the Asian people risked being forgotten or overlooked. It also meant that the
story of the Asian community might be retold in biased ways or a singular perspective.
Therefore, Chinese students supporting their community and other organizations pushing for
minorities’ rights pushed for the establishment of Asian American studies (Changing the World,
124). During the 60s, there was limited literature on the Asian community. The Chinese
community in Chinatown and other Asian communities in America faced challenges attaining
