Chapter 8 of Kwan’s novel carries the story’s central theme, the theme of family. The
chapter is about Rachel’s encounter with the family of Nick. After two years of being in a
relationship with Rachel, Nick decides to take her to his home to introduce her to his parents and
relatives. What was to be a session for the family of Nick getting to meet Nick’s girlfriend turned
to be an unpleasant experience to both Rachel and Nick. Rachel does not get the reception she
expected from the family of Nick, she is even harassed and intimidated by some of the family
members from Nicks family. It is in this chapter that the author applies the use of irony as a
technique to communicate Rachel’s unpleasant encounter with the family of Nick. The use of
irony is evident from this line from the chapter ““Yes, I know. Rachel Chu, of Cupertino, Palo
Alto, Chicago, and Manhattan. You see, your reputation precedes you.” Where Nick’s cousin,
Oliver T’sien ironically mocks Rachel with the Chines titles which were not hers as a way of
showing her that she was different from the rest of the family members.
In terms of language, the author employs the use of several Chinese Slangs in its
presentation. The author also appears to have transferred some of the Chinese language structure
into the novel. There are a lot of Chinese phrases and clauses that affect the form of the novel
and its ability to communicate to a larger audience. An example of the Chinese phrases from the
chapter is this phrase “That’s kueh pie tee, a nyonya dishwhich implies to a dish filled with
jicama, carrots and shrimp. The phrase involves a combination of English and Chinese words
which is also a creative way that the author utilizes to communicate to both the English and
Chinese audience who are his main target audience.
It is through the various dialogues between characters in the story that the reader is able
to understand the form and language used by the author in the novel. The author utilizes the use
of dialogues as a literary element to communicate his intended message and theme. Chapter 8 of
