SOLIPSISM 2
How might assent to solipsism, which you studied last week, affect a person's ability to
evaluate research? Explain.
Assent to solipsism implies that an individual believes that his mental states are the only
ones that exist. Therefore, an individual with an assent to solipsism relies on his experiences,
emotions, and thoughts. A solipsist does not attach meaning to the fact that there could be other
thoughts than his. Therefore, an argument is only intelligible when analyzed within an
internalized context of one’s thoughts.
Assent to solipsism affects negatively an individual’s ability to evaluate research. Since
an individual believes that there are only ‘my’ experiences, there is no way an individual can
evaluate research based on their properties. There is no one that can be completely be alone in
the universe. An individual cannot criticize his own fundamental beliefs. It is very rare to find an
individual who is willing to examine his own beliefs. It is not possible for an individual to
maintain that there is something beyond their experiences in the evaluation of research.
An assent to solipsism raises many questions in research. How can an individual use his
supposed analogical inferences in research? How can an individual apply psychological concepts
in research? Therefore, an individual does not possess sure knowledge of anything outside his
own experiences. This introduces methodological doubt in research as an individual cannot
evaluate critically the ideas of others or the existing thoughts.
How might one's ability to evaluate research be affected by the rejection of solipsism?
Explain
Rejection of solipsism results in an objective evaluation of research. Notably, solipsism
denies objectivity; which is an essential concept in evaluating research. The world is filled with
