The term psychological disorder or rather commonly known mental disorders is used
to refer to the abnormalities that are related to the mind as a result of unrelenting behaviour
patterns. These so called patterns have a serious impact on the individual’s life and the day to
day function of a victim. There are several different identified psychological disorders that are
classified, and they include eating disorders, mood disorders, personality disorders, antisocial
personality disorder, psychotic disorders, sexual disorders among many others
("Psychological Disorders - Symptoms, Causes, Treatments", 2014). A psychiatric condition
needs a lot of assessing to identify, getting to know if a patient symptoms have elevated to the
extent that it requires to be diagnosed is a very difficult task. However, there are valuable
tools known as the four Ds that that help practitioners while carrying out the assessing the
patients. The four D’s stand for, dysfunction, deviance, danger and distress. They are the
symptoms that many record.
Deviance being the first “D” is easily understood through the schemes of classification
that are the same as those that are given in the DSM IV-TR criteria of diagnosis. The degree
of deviance is determined by other tests that give out a general population norm. A lot of data
and helpful information is mostly collected through clinical interviews. Deviance patterns are
shared among many disorders thus different models of diagnosis are required to be examined
("Psychological Disorders - Symptoms, Causes, Treatments", 2014). Dysfunction being the
second “D” plays a very important role in determining the existence of a problem that is large
enough for a diagnosis to be considered. The dysfunction has to be noteworthy enough so as
to be able to interfere with the major life of an individual be considered for diagnosis. It is
very essential to try and identify dysfunction that is across the vast domains of life as well as
other places.
Distress is closely related to dysfunction and it is identified as a very essential way in
the grading of perpetual dysfunction in the life of an individual. This association is not always
linear. A great deal of dysfunction or rather less and little disorders can be experienced by a
