The Bronfenbrenner’s ecological model:
Also known as human ecology theory or development in context, ecological model analyzes five
major fundamental environmental systems with which a child interacts. The model offers a
ground framework from which psychologists can study and research the relationships with
people’s contexts in both the society at large and community in particular. The theory was
devised by Urie Bronfenbrenner.
The model provides five systems as discussed below.
Mesosystem it is an interconnection between the teachers, families, and Microsystems. It is
also described as the relationship between family and child’s peers
Microsystems it is the groups and institutions that are directly and immediately impact the
development of child including religious institutions, family, schools, peers and neighborhood.
Exosytem it is connection between person’s immediate context and social setting in which a
person does not have active role. For instance, the child’s or parent’s experience at home may be
influenced bt the experience of the parent at work.
Macrosystem this involves in describing the culture of an individual. The cultural context
includes industrialized and developing countries, poverty, socioeconomic status and ethnicity.
The members of a particular cultural group share common values, heritage and identity. The
macrosystems have evolved over long period since every generation may alter the macrosystesm
and thus, resulting to their unique development.
Chronosystem it is the patterning of transitions and environmental event over a particular life
course. It also encompasses such sociohistorical circumstances. For instance, divorce is
