Movement of the turbines due to their weights and size experience some delays in the various
forms of transportation due to the need to handle them in a specific manner. Discussed below are
the various delays that may be experienced under different modes of transportation.
Ocean Vessel
Loading of the ship can take up to four days which is a delay on the wind turbine units. The
loading of the ship takes a long time because first plans on cargo securing and lifting need
developing, second a ship with onboard cranes have to be dispatched to the port to secure the
cargo, and thirdly loading involves many specialists such as cargo superintend, cargo surveyors
and port stevedores.
The other delay is that the trips have to be timed so that the ship arrive at the period of the open
season of St. Lawrence Seaway and at the same time take into consideration the arrival of the
expensive cranes and specialist used in loading during scheduling.
Train
There is a delay in loading the components on the train. This is because the turbine blades come
in large quantity and are large and therefore require special arrangement in sets of three for there
to be optimal and efficient cargo load on the train. This takes time and hence the delay.
The other source of delay is the fact that the trains have to arrive in a particular order which is
dependent on the component erection that is being done at the site of the farm. The fact that the
train has to arrive in a certain order brings in delay as one train even if its free cannot make the
trip until there is coordination with the site for the component that is being erected at the turbines
assembly farm.
