While both descriptive and inferential measures are applied in the real world, research
shows that most business enterprises use descriptive measures to keep track of their operations.
These help keep track of not only the business performance but also helps in the making of the
decisions regarding the business direction. Almost all business if not all keep records regarding
their sales, expenses and costs associated with running business, employees and their respective
salaries and stock among other numerical data. The features of these data such as the measures of
central tendency, the spread and other descriptions are used to analyse the data and relate it to the
overall organisational performance.
Though both descriptive and inferential measures involve numerical information and
measurements, they differ in a number of ways. Descriptive data gives the features of a data set
and cannot be used in generalization whereas inferential data studies samples of populations of
data and gives generalization. Therefore, whereas one can manage to keep daily track of
descriptive data, the same cannot be said for inferential data, giving a reason as to why the
former is preferred by businesses. Consequently, descriptive data is cheaper to keep records of
and to analyse as opposed to inferential data which requires research and later analysis.

everyone.Most importantly, successful businesses invest heavily in research and gathering of
statistical and analytical data. This is because; data and analytics provide facts and insight for
businesses, that they can use in improving profitability and serve their customer base better. It is
