QUANTITATIVE VS. QUALITATIVE RESEARCH 2
Quantitative research is a statistical method of carrying out research where data is
gathered in numerical form that can easily be put into different categories or in a certain manner
that is measurable by units of measurement (Cooper and Schindler, 2014). Conversely,
qualitative research is a statistical method of carrying out research whereby data collected is not
in numerical form. The data collected in a qualitative research is typically descriptive hence its
analysis is harder than quantitative data. Both quantitative and qualitative research has
similarities and differences but before comparing the two methods of statistical research, it is
imperative to discuss each one of them.
Quantitative Research
Quantitative research is the type of research method that is based on numerical data that
can easily be analyzed using statistical methods and it is mainly used by most social scientists.
This type of research majorly focuses on tangible objects and how often social phenomenon
occur. For instance, one could be interested in counting the numbers buses that run along a
certain road in a day. Carrying out quantitative research would entail literal counting of the
number of buses that pass through that section of the road. This research entails experiments in
which manipulation of certain variables take place and the outcomes measured. It also entails
studies that are carried out in the natural world, for instance, the U.S. Census. Collection of the
numerical data can be done by machines or through surveys, inventories and more. The data
collected is analyzed using statistics and the final analysis shows the relationships between
certain variables that were researched on.
Advantages and disadvantages of quantitative research
