TRANSGENIC ORGANISMS 2
Transgenic organisms
To create a genetically modified organism, the foreign deoxyribonucleic (DNA) gene is
introduced into the host organism for the purpose of changing its genetic structure (Setlow,
2012). The first step involves the extraction of the required gene from the organism chosen.
Secondly, the genes are cloned to identify the specifically required gene. The next step involves
gene designing where the genetic engineers modify the transgenes so that it works when
introduced to the new host. Afterward, the modified gene undergoes a transformation where it is
placed inside the cells of the organism and when the transformation is complete backcross
breeding begin and the transgenic organism is created.
Transgenic organisms are beneficial to the human being in some ways. First and foremost
transgenic animals are engineered for economic progression as in the case of cattle which
produce more milk that have the particular nutrient required by human beings (Pinkert, 2014).
Other animals like mouse help scientist in testing the effective treatment for a particular disease.
Transgenic plants are often free from crop diseases and give more yields within a shorter time
compared to traditional plants. In addition to that, human suffering is alleviated as they can
undergo a transplant of important organs to acquire organs that are transgenic and thus prolong
their lifespan.
The risks involved while creating transgenic organisms include the danger that the species are
put into while trying to experiment how the transgene will work after being induced in a given
species (Nichols & Roth, 2013). This transgene may alter the genetic composition and make the
species vulnerable to new diseases in some cases the introduction of a transgene leads to the
death of a species. Another risk involves the creation of a subhuman race which would be
