THEMES IN BENDING LIKE BECKHAM MOVIE 2
Bend it like Beckham deals with a variety of different themes and issues, through the
story of Jess and her desperation to play football (soccer) rather than conform to the traditional
female Indian role expected of her. Bend it like Beckham depicts struggles that women deal
with, of what girls should or should not do, culturally and though strict gender roles. The movie
shows two families, their daughters wanting to play football, but think it’s a man’s game. I
chose Bend it like Beckham because of the interest I have in the Indian Culture. This paper will
analyze the themes of culture, gender, language and family.
Bending it like Beckham is a comedy film that explores bending the rules of culture to
reach ones goals. It explores the world of women’s football even as their heritage denies it from
kick-about in the parks to free kicks in the Germany finals. It follows the lives of two eighteen
year’s old girls whose love for soccer sets them in a journey on playing it at a professional level.
The film reveals the moral values of the Indian culture as jess and pinky meet an old lady in the
streets and bow in respect as a sign of greetings. The Indian girls are expected to observe their
cultural values through learning how to cook brown chapattis, vegetables, and beef among other
traditional foods. However, that is not the case with jess who is only interested in exploring her
football passion to the extent of lying to her parents just to join the women’s soccer team under
Coach Joe.
From her background, it is a taboo for women to play football leave allow revealing their
legs for man to see. The boys are not allowed to join the football teams so for the girls is even a
case not considered debatable. They are forbidden from interacting and intermarrying with the
whites, blacks and Muslims but only Indians. Their culture allows arranged marriages for their
children as evident with pinkies marriage. Morality is held at a very high regard to the extent that
pinkies marriage was almost stopped simply because the in-laws thought they saw jess her sister
