Sources of Radiation
Computer monitors are potential types of radiation emission in the workplace. Computer
monitors use traditional cathode-ray tubes or modern flat-screen designs, which produce
potentially harmful rays. Traditional computer monitors create images by sending high-voltage
electron beams in a vacuum tube that makes them glow. On the other hand, modern flat-screen
monitors create images using liquid crystals filters that produce different colors. Although flat
screens use law voltage, long-term exposure has potential health effects on the user because they
produce mild radiation. Computer radiations contain X-rays and ultra-violate light. These
radiations are harmful because they have more energy.
Protective devices, such as EMF meters can help reduce the exposure to computer
monitors’ radiation. The meter helps a computer user regulates computer radiation by showing the
emission level. It is difficult to notice harmful radiation from a computer screen. However, an
EMF meter can help a person adjust their computer light emissions. Another effective way of
minimizing exposure to computer radiation is by reducing the time spent on a computer. Spending
more time on a computer increases radiation exposure. Thus, a computer user should take regular
breaks to minimize exposure. During the breaks, a person should avoid other screens such as TVs
and phones.
