Question 1
Jim Burton, when entering a new role, has to make a lot of assumptions. In the book the
adventures of an IT leader, Jim Burton tends to stay late at night studying and, in an instance,
makes a trip to the bookstore. During his first day as the CIO, he sat back after finishing his
conversation with the CEO Carl to look at some cites. The one text that caught his eye was the
one that was saying that IT was in a position to understand the business better well and end-to-
end of all the departments. The page also stated that no other department could interact with
more different departments in the business than the IT department. He thought this discovery
was a lot of crap since he believed that IT people did not know the business better than the other
departments. The late-night of studying had also taught him that he needed to think harder of the
workings of management and that the IT area had a lot of changes due to changing times (Austin
et al., 2016).
From the trip to the book store, Jim Burton learned some things that he had to better his
managerial skills. He knew that he could not manage the IT department the same way he did in
the other department he was in, that is, the loan operations. Jim burton had vast knowledge in the
loan operations department and practically knew everything, even the tasks that were done by his
subordinates. Conversely, as the IT manager, he had to accept that he could not show himself
what he did not know. He did not realize the techies that involved expert attention in the vast
areas of information technology. The bookstore was very helpful to Jim as it set a pathway for
him to manage the new position he was offered. After ignoring his girlfriend's Maggie's advice to
focus on obtaining a general idea of the department, he tried teaching himself the complex task
involved, which was very confusing to him.
