CHILD ABUSE IN AMERICA 2
Child abuse in America
America has a high rate of child abuse. Research shows that 12 in every 1000 children
are victims of child abuse. The affected children have negative life outcomes such as the
engagement in future violence. There is also a high probability of such children becoming
abusive parents in the future. Children that are abused undergo trauma that can last a long time.
Their emotional and mental health is affected negatively.
Hypothesis
I hypothesize that there is a significant relationship between child abuse and negative life
outcomes. The negative life outcomes include the engagement in future violence, contracting of
STDs, involvement in substance abuse, and teen pregnancy.
Findings
Different states define child abuse differently. However, there is a commonly used
definition by the law. It is defined as any recent act or the failure of a parent to act as required;
which results in death or serious harm of the child. Also, something that results in sexual abuse
and exploitation. Therefore, child abuse can be categorized as neglect, physical abuse, sexual
abuse, and psychological mal-treatment.
Research has shown that the children that experience abuse are likely to engage in violent
activities more than their peers. It is due to the distortive nature the cognitive functioning of the
child. From the cycle of violence and evidence from the previous research, children who
experience maltreatment have a higher likelihood of engaging and perpetrating violence as they
grow up. Most of the children that experience abuse usually are rejected by their close friends. It
