Question One
The company employs a batch processing system to bake cookies. The first and
foremost step is getting orders from the distributors to help determine the amounts of
ingredients needed and schedule production. The list of cookies required is delivered at the
start of the shift. The person in charge of mixing feeds the information into the computer to
determine the quantities of the ingredients required. The information is then relayed to the
storage silos, and ingredients are sent to the mixing machine and thoroughly mixed (Schroeder
et al., 2017). The resulting batter is poured into the cutting machines. After cutting, the cookies
are transferred to the ovens using a conveyor belt. An extra step of filling and folding is
performed on the filled cookies. Cookies emerging from the oven are placed onto cooling ranks
and manually parked into boxes. During this step, the deformed and broken cookies are
removed to ensure the quality is maintained. The boxes are then sealed and stored, awaiting
distribution to various distributors.
Question Two
The first way the company has used to increase production is by automating the
ingredients mixing process. It has reduced the wastage of ingredients since only the correct
amount is drawn from the silos and mixed (Schroeder et al., 2017). It reduces human error in
mixing the ingredient minimizing possible wastages and spoilages that might occur. The
second way it increases productivity is by diagonally cutting the non-filled cookies. The
cookies require less oven space than the straight-cut ones, making it possible to bake many
cookies. Another way it uses to achieve increased productivity is by backing cookies in
sequences that minimize frequent cleaning of the processing unit, which consumes much time
affecting production. This is accomplished by first backing the light-colored cookies before the
dark-colored ones and baking the oatmeal cookies before the raisin ones (Schroeder et al.,
