Anatomy 2 Exam 3 Study Guide Chapter 5: Lymphatic System  Lymphatic System – o Consists of:  Lymphatic vessels w/ a fluid – lymph  Lymphatic Organs  Lymph Nodes  Tonsils  Spleen  Thymus Gland  Lymphocytes  B Cells  T Cells o 2 Major Fxns: 1. Drains the tissues of excess interstitial fluid  Water moves from blood into the interstitium as cells undergo gas, nutrient, and waste exchange with capillaries  Water in the ISF can diffuse into the body cells if needed  If too much water in the interstitium, the xs ISF drains into a lymphatic vessel/capillary  If xs ISF fluid were in the interstitium then the tissues would swell o Edema  causes tissue damage  Once inside a lymphatic capillary the ISF = lymph  Lymph = any xs ISF found in lymphatic vessels o Xs ISF makes it back to blood via vessels merging w/ veins  Pathogens will also be swept into the capillaries 2. It participates in immunity -resistance to disease (leukocytes) o Nonspecific Immunity – ability to protect from any foreign substance in general  Neutrophils, monocytes/macrophages, eosinophils, basophils  Target any pathogen and is harder to kill b/c no specificity o Specific Immunity – ability to protect the body via specificity or memory  B & T Lymphocytes  Targets a specific pathogen (E coli or influenza)  Lymphatic Vessels o Lymphatic capillaries – smallest lymphatic vessels always near blood capillaries  Consist of Endothelial cells ? ...
