The story of an hour author by Kate Chopin is centered around an individual

named Mrs. Mallard whom is enduring health concerns and is in the midst of finding out

that her husband Brently Mallard's has just passed away in a tragic railroad accident

(Chopin). Given the multitude of simultaneous tragedies that was triggering a plethora of

emotional disturbances, Mrs. Mallard, who we will refer to as she, began to sink into a

depressive reality of instability and emotional turbulence. She questioned her existence

claiming she had nothing to live for, dwelled within her room on a cozy armchair the

comfortable view enduring isolation, as well as cognitively depriving herself of positive

stimulation. There was a moment, a silent triggering whisper that implants the roots to

ensure that she would survive during times of turmoil and conquer challenges of

uncertainties.

The pragmatics in the story is Mrs. Mallard who is suffering a tragic loss coupled

with the deterioration of health conditions and is essentially in the beginning stages of

enduring grief. She then comes to realize that her life is meaningful and worthwhile

through the silent whisper that she encounters while dwelling in her room. Given her

circumstances and the compounding of differentiating tragic experiences, Mrs. Mallard

changes her perspective and visualizes a new life as she makes her way into a different

realm, the afterlife, by preparing cognitively, emotionally, and physically as she

continues to remind herself that her inevitable death is the beginning of life. Although

her remaining days was filled with self-ridicule, she turned her perception around and

utilized it in the preparation mentally for journey and travels towards her husband

presents.
