SOCIOLOGY 2
A social movement can be defined as a group of people or an individual who focus on a
particular political or social issue with a view of implementing certain changes or go through
resist in order to undo a social change (Briscoe, 2016). There are quite a number of such
individuals who have desired to implement social changes. This article touches on three activist;
Gloria Steinem, Julian Bond and Cesar Chavez. These individuals have been influenced by
various reasons that had them became social activists.
Reasons for involvement in social movement
Identification with a certain being a member of a particular group is one thing that drives people
into participating into social movements. When an individual finds people with whom they share
the same interest, activist such as Cesar Chavez first identified with particular groups that had the
same interest as his and this motivated him in trying to fight against social ills that famers faced
in his time.
Cognition can be a good driver to an individual, when people become affiliated with certain
social groups their desire in meeting the group`s needs open`s a way in which will end them up
in activism, just because they happened to be the group icon or representatives. For instance
Julian Bond who gained influence in the political arena in order to meet his social ends as an
activist.
Emotions tends to be attributable with activism, this is one wide topic that has a deeper effect in
both the social and political movements, it is one factor that would tell whether an individual is
in a movement to stay or will later drop out when the going gets tough. An activist like Julian
bond showed how he had the movement at heart that even when his counterpart John Lewis
accused him of drug dealing he still held on the burner.
Social activist in most instances have acted upon what motivates them to move towards
achieving certain goals, through this a number of them have exerted energy in reaching those
goals, a good example is Gloria Steinem who is a feminist activist; she tried to deal with issues
related to domestic violence that affects women in the society. The motives can basically be
classified under three main categories that is, instrumentality motives, identity motives and
group-based anger motives (Shragge, 2013).
Early childhood life has proved to play an important role in social movements. An activist such
as Gloria Steinem who lived her life in single parenthood got her motivations from such
experiences which lead her into becoming feminist activist when realized that her case was not
an individual cry but many had gone through the same ordeal as she deed.
Personal views in relation to social activism
Personally, I have never engaged in any political or social movement however from the little
knowledge I have about it I am strongly for it since it is a tool for fighting existing social
