CARBON TAX
The continued emission of gas to the atmosphere has pushed legislators in many
countries to enact legislations that are aimed at reducing the emission of such gases to the
atmosphere. The fact that the public is aware of the global warming effects forces the lawmakers
to come up with such laws too. Carbon dioxide is a toxic gas that is released to the atmosphere
by various manufacturing companies (Hsu, 2011). This therefore has called for the carbon tax
laws to be enacted so as to control the amount of carbon dioxide that is released to the
environment.
Carbon tax is a form of pollution law that levies a certain fee on the production,
distribution and use of fossil fuel. The fee that is levied is calculated based on the amount of
carbon the combustion of that specific fuel emits to the atmosphere. The government set a price
per ton of carbon products that are emitted. Since the this tax that is levied on the carbon
products makes the use of dirty fuels more expensive, it encourages reduction in the
consumption of carbon emitting products thus ensuring increased energy efficiency(Hsu, 2011).
The enactment of carbon laws also makes the use of alternative forms of energy more
competitive in terms of cost with the polluting fuels like coal, oil, and natural gas.
Carbon tax is based on negative externalities as an economic principle. These
externalities are costs that are not paid for. When people or companies consume fossil fuel, they
cause pollution which causes harm to the society. It is for that reason that people and companies
that are using carbon emitting products should pay for it.
One of the various principles that guide the working of the carbon tax is that the tax that
is collected from the carbon taxation is to be recycled so as to give the normal taxpayers a tax
