BIPOLAR DISORDER-A CASE OF MR. JONES 2
General description and background of the disease
Bipolar causes different shifts in moods, in thinking, and also in the behavior of the
affected person. It happens from the highs of the mania from one end to the lows of extreme to
the other end. It can last for more than days, or weeks or even months. Mood swings in bipolar
are very different from the normal mood swing, this is because they can cause interference to
someone’s functionality of day to day life and prevent someone from undertaking his or her day
to day activities. When one is in depressive period, he or can feel so tired to wake up from his or
her bed. Others feel so helpless due to the loss of their jobs or because of their huge debts (Fast,
& Preston, 2006).
Bipolar disorder can cause risky behaviors such as suicide. Bipolar has four types. They
are; bipolar 1 disorder which lasts for at least 7 days. Here, the person needs so much care and
requires an immediate treatment or hospital care. The patient suffers from depression which last
at least for 2 weeks. One can also suffer depression and manic symptoms at this time. The
second one is called bipolar 2 Disorder where several periods of hypomanic and depressive
symptoms are shown. However, they are not blown up like in the bipolar 1 disorder. The third
type is called Cyclothymic Disorder which is also referred to as Cyclothymia. It has several
periods of hypomanic symptoms and also several periods of depressive symptoms that last for at
least 2 years. But for adolescents and children they last for at least 1 year. These symptoms
don’t meet the analytic requirements for a hypomanic episode and a depressive episode. The last
type is specified bipolar and also unspecified bipolar disorder which does not have the other
three characteristics or symptoms. There also times which people feel and function well and this
period is called the well state (Miklowitz, 2011).
