Question: What is your position on the role of women in the work force?
Women play an important role in the work force, as their participation contributes to
achieving gender equality in all fields of live. Women that participate in the work force gain
many personal advantages, such as a higher degree of economic freedom, and motivate other
women to achieve the same. More so, research studies show that women that work contribute
to the financial stability of their families and even bring macroeconomic benefits. As both
personal experience and research evidence support the idea that women have an important role
in the work force, it seems imperative that more measures are taken to ensure that gender is not
a barrier to equal wages.
The role of women in the work force has significantly changed during the 20th century.
Old literature books and history books have shown me that the idea of a woman working
outside the house was often seen in a negative light by the society, up until the early 20th
century. It was during the Great War when the role of women in the work force was finally
starting to be appreciated. As most men were participating in the war, women had to take many
of the jobs that were previously reserved for men. That period was probably the first in modern
history when women had a crucial role in the economy of nations.
Nowadays the society acknowledges the importance of the role of women in the work
force to a much higher degree than in the past, and I believe that this trend has increase
significantly starting with the 1960s. However, I have often noticed on many occasions,
including during class readings, that women are still less likely to occupy the highest positions
in many types of organizations, whether private or public, and that women are often paid less
than men for the same job. My sister, for example, worked as a bartender during her college
years and later found out that one of her male friend obtained a higher wage for the same job
and the same employee. While this type of discrimination is more severe in some job sectors
than in others, it certainty still exist. There may be many reasons behind this type of

discrimination and one of it is the fact that many people do not consider the role of women in
the work force to be as worthy as the role of men.
While prejudices still exist, there is plenty of research evidence that show just how
important is the role of women in the work force, not only for individuals and families, but also
for the economy. In terms of individual gains, women that have a job, especially those who
have a career, are significantly more independent economically and have a higher self-esteem.
The same women motivate others to become as independent as they are; in other words, they
contribute in creating a culture of equality (Sandberg, 2013). Because men are more likely than
women to get fired, women in the work force contribute to family stability, something which
has been especially noticed during the last economic recession (Moghadam, 2015). Working
women also bring macroeconomic benefits. In developing countries, women’s work is likely
the most important factor in reducing poverty (Sandberg, 2013). It has also be shown that
gender equality has a positive correlation with GDP per capita, and it is estimated that raising
women’s workforce participation to the same level as men’s could raise the GDP per capita of
the US by 5 % (Moghadam, 2015).
Both the personal experience discussed and the research evidence shown above makes
me believe that women’s participation in the work force has a crucial rol in advancing on the
path toward gender equality. The historical evolution of women’s rights in general coincides
with the evolution of the women’s rights within the work force. Women with with stable jobs
have a higher degree of economic freedom and motivate other women to achieve the same,
while they are often the main income provider to their families. More so, gender equality in the
work force correlates with GDP per capita, and a higher participation of women in the work
force could mean a higher degree of prosperity. Because the payment gap between men and
women is one of the major barriers toward gender equality in the work force, I believe that it is
imperative that measures are taken to eliminate this barrier.
