Running head: STEREOTYPES AND HEURISTICS
A heuristic refers to strategies which ignore a portion of information, with the aim of
making decisions that are more frugal, quick, and/or accurate than other methods that are more
complex (Gigerenzer and Gaissmaier 2011). On the other hand, stereotypes refers to generalized
beliefs concerning characteristics or qualities of a group of people. Negative stereotypes are
often associated with prejudice whereas heuristics have been associated with many limitations
when carrying out decision making where multiple objectives are involved.
Since these two can be responsible for perpetuating disparities in healthcare by doctors
unwittingly, it is thus crucial to consider their effect in the medical field. The mere existence of
cultural stereotypes can influence processing of information about an individual resulting in
unintended biases when decisions are made also known as “implicit bias” (Chapman et al. 2013).
According to this study, a useful framework aimed at developing an intervention is based upon
conceptualization that implicit bias is a “habit of the mind”. Therefore people need to have
awareness about the habitual engagement they possess in behaviors that are not desired. This will
lead to a provision of strategies that boost self-efficacy for engaging in new behaviors that are
desirable. In the study by (Green et al 2007), he has exemplified how increasing the awareness of
physicians of their susceptibleness to implicit bias created behavior changes. For example
(Chapman et al 2013) has noted in his study that a subgroup of members who had awareness that
bias was a center of the investigation were significantly the most likely to give a
recommendation of thrombolysis for black people patients. Individuating can be embraced as
one of the effective strategies in reduction of implicit bias. This refers to conscious effort that is
focused on the person`s specific information thus creating more salient features of the
individual`s social category (Green et al 2007).
