The Last Time She Tried: A Short Story
The last time she tried, she failed miserably. She was even embarrassed to tell anyone,
leave alone seeking help. Janet’s plan failed because she did not pay attention to the label. She
thought she was taking Oxy, only to learn later that she had taken six tablets of Advil. She had
been a bit sleepy in class that afternoon. By the time she was home, she felt okay; better than
most days. This had been a terrible failure.
Success had been elusive for Janet her entire life. An outsider’s view would not qualify
Janet as a failure. Her perfectly symmetrical face was always crowned with a slight smile which
never seemed to fade. She was tall and slender, and maintained a genteel and noble gait. Her
long blonde hair fell to her shoulders almost as if to match her imposing physique. She had the
body of a ballerina but lacked confidence to even dream to be one. Janet had many friends
throughout her 15 years and had managed close to 10,000 followers on Instagram.
Yet, for most of her life, she felt inadequate, as if she never really succeeded at anything.
Mom had told her that she a year late on all growth milestones; from walking to talking and
reading. At the tender age of only eight years, her teacher had said that she would need
additional tutoring to catch up with students in her grade. Despite being very social, Janet didn’t
play any sports in high school and neither was she considered talented enough to sing in the
school choir. Her grades were average but not good enough for her parents. Their behavior and

hard as they could never to talk about the incident that happened when she was only 12 and the
days she spent in the psychiatric ward. It hurt her but she had never found a way to address it, or
even escape. As the middle child in a family of five siblings, she was often invisible and was
constantly reminded of the need to assert her place in the big family.
Last summer, Janet felt that her life had just turned from bad to worse. Adolescence had
been a horrible, horrible experience for her. When she joined high school last year, Janet realized
that she was no longer a famous figure in the school. Several of her friends had transferred to
other schools and high school was not what she hoped for. Her freshman year took away
everything she thought she had left. There were way more beautiful girls in high school that she
felt she received no attention from anyone. She also lost several of her friends, some who just
stopped being friends, and the pressure from her parents more than doubled; they wanted her to
become a ‘successful’ person as they had become.
Her father was a travel business consultant for one of the largest travel agencies in the
Bay Area and Mom was a graphic designer working with a number of tech companies in Silicon
Valley. Her eldest sister had already established a name in the fashion industry and her elder
brother was close to entering Stanford to begin his life-long dream of becoming a top lawyer in
the nation.
What about her? What had she achieved? Would she ever come close to competing with
her brother and sister? Wouldn’t she just remain the Black Sheep of the family? There always
was a Black Sheep, right? It had to be her. Janet’s recurrent and persistent thoughts about herself
that summer had been about how useless she was and how she was the odd one out in the family.
But that would not last long
