WORKING WITH DIVERSE 2
Part 1:
The experience I had while interacting with older adults of different cultural
backgrounds
The mainstream experience that I learned is that such cohorts tend to be very much alert
and carefully while they interact with other people. The majority of them were experiencing
serious life-threatening illnesses, were sexually inactive, and were depressed. As such, they
often behave abnormally.
Three most important lessons learned from your experiences? Why do you see these as most
important?
While working with elders, one must be patient and a good listener’
One must be able to be empathetic and kind
One should be ready to be harassed and rebuked even though you are helping them.
Understanding this will enable one to appropriately help the elder in terms of their
healthcare since the majority have problems.
Part 2:
The name of the article is Health and Healthier Care of African American Older Adults
Review and select at least 1 of the Stanford Ethnigeriatric Module items (below).
1. Which of the 13 Stanford modules did you select and why?
I selected the ethngeriatric module item is Cultural Biases and Misdiagnoses. I selected the
topic since it talks about current issues of concern including the existing cultural biases
regarding illnesses and health and the beliefs regarding groups or individuals who are at most
susceptible to one or several disorders which is fundamental amongst these factors.
