TEXAS MEDICAID HEALTHCARE POLICY
Texas Medicaid Healthcare Policy
Introduction
The Medicaid policy was created in 1965 with an aim of reducing the cost of healthcare by
the provision of public insurance to benefit mostly the low and middle income earning citizens.
Even though this program was designed at the national level, it allowed states to alter it to ensure
that citizens received optimum benefits regardless of the state that they resided (Centre on Budget
and Policy Priorities, 2015). It is through this avenue that the Texan government has redesigned
the program to improve its flexibility and administration.
Stakeholders Involved In Developing The Policy
The Texas legislature through its lawmakers has been the driving force behind the various
reforms that have been implemented in the original Medicaid policy. Also important to the reform
process have been industry stakeholders such as medical practitioners associations, health
insurance providers as well as the state citizens who have provided important suggestions and
feedback.
Opinion of Residents
The Medicaid policy has been met by both amicable support especially by the Democrats
but has been the subject of resentment by some Republicans who feel that the program is a burden
to the state in terms of the financial outlay. Based on the minimal alterations that have been made
since the enactment of the policy, it may be concluded that not only are the citizens happy with
the program, but the lawmakers are also keen to leave it running as it is. In fact, a recent bid to
increase the number of people covered by the program was met with strong opposition who felt
that it would be sustainable in the long term (Carrie, 2015).
