LESSONS FROM THE VIETNAM WAR 2
Lessons from the Vietnam War
A significant lesson for the US leaders was to avoid entering into war without an exit
strategy. American entered the war to extend its interests in combating communism but
without a clear strategy hence unable to know when to call it quits. As a result, the US
suffered monetary loss invested in the war, military loss as well as defeat in the war. The
second lesson was that people cannot impose their beliefs on others and third, using military
force may lead to more damaging effects and rivalry. The US wanted to spread capitalism
beliefs in a communism dominated region which resulted in more damage than good for the
Vietnamese people who were looking for political, economic and social nationalism. The
conflict of interest led to enmity and ridicule of US involvement in international affairs
(Petraeus, 2010). I believe that these lessons were assimilated. American leaders have opted
to use military action more lightly in international affairs. Again, leaders have shown
improved strategy in waging war on global issues like terrorism in the middle. For example,
Obama’s administration was tactical to capture Osama with little commission and bloodshed
unlike in the Vietnamese war.
