Cultural diversity plays a key role in law enforcement agencies. Most experts agree on
the effects of improving the diversity of culture in public policing. Cultural diversity in policing
can have symbolic impacts. Cultural diversity in public policing can result in increased trust in
police among people. When the police have an excellent knowledge of cultural diversity, they
can know how to handle people from different cultures. Secondly, cultural diversity results in
people having confidence in the police. When people are confident in police, they openly the
issues they face and that need to be tackled by the police. This is because they become sure that
their queries will be dealt with. Cultural diversity helps to overcome barriers as well as
perception problems. This helps the police to serve citizens from all cultures diligently and
effectively.
There are various plans of actions for the police department to address the issues of
relationships with various cultural populations in the United States. African Americans people
make a significant percentage of people living in the United States. For a long time, this cultural
population has complained about being mistreated by the police for crimes they did not commit.
Many of them have ended in jail or being killed while they are innocent (Loftus, 2010). The
police can take various actions to improve the relationship with this cultural population. First, the
police should utilize the data at their hand to measure what matters. They should broadly collect
data, standardize, track and analyze the data given to them and the collected one before
proceeding with the legal actions. They should also collaborate with data partners to have the
right data before prosecuting people. The police should also increase positive community
contact. This would enable them to understand the population better and avoid misunderstanding
people per their cultural background.
