IMPACT OF THE AFFORDABLE CARE ACT (ACA) OF 2010 ON HEALTH CARE
ORGANIZATION AND FINANCE 2
Impact of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) of 2010 on Health Care Organization and Finance
The Affordable Care Act is a federal statute that was enacted in 2010. At the time, it was
considered to be the single most significant regulatory change since Medicare and Medicaid.
ACA has many impacts on healthcare organizations and finance across the country. One of the
major impacts is that there has been an increased demand for care in the hospitals (Fielding,
Teutsch, & Koh, 2016). In the past, the cost of healthcare would easily push away people from
seeking medical services since they could not afford them or did not have a medical insurance
cover. However, ACA has reduced the cost of medical care and increased the insurance coverage
of Americans across the country. This has led to increased demand for medical services.
Hospitals have also seen an increase in their revenues due to the increased demand for care
services.
Another impact is that there have been lower uncompensated care costs for the uninsured.
This is mainly because the number of uninsured people in the country has sharply reduced due to
increased medical insurance coverage. Before ACA came across, the healthcare costs in the
country were skyrocketing and this made it difficult for people to afford medical insurance.
Providers of medical insurance have also been put under sharp regulations so as to ensure that
more coverage is observed. In the past, some of the providers were issuing directives that
negatively affected the realization of various healthcare outcomes. The ACA thereby made it
difficult for providers to exploit members of the public who seek various medical services across
the country. A negative implication that ACA has had on finance is that it has increased the level
of government borrowing. Such an increase has been necessitated by increased government
spending in healthcare.
