For a democracy to thrive in a country, there are a number of necessities that needs to be
meet. To begin with civilization and literacy/education level of a country should of low rates
where everybody understands their rights (personal freedom, freedom of press, freedom of
speech, and freedom of association) coupled with accountability and responsibility. On the same
note, there ought to be good coordination and interdependency of the pillars of government that
include executive, judiciary and legislature (Little, 2017). Similarly, for democracy to fully
flourish law and order framework should be robust in a way that it creates a safe environment for
its population both internally and externally. Finally, there should be a strong sense of patriotism
and nationhood from its citizens. Democracy can exits for instance England is such an example
of a country whose leadership is hereditary, and they are a democratic country.
Many do not understand the essence of participating in these processes. In addition, a big
percentage of the population is frustrated with the way government run things without listening
to their views and opinions (Plattner, 2015). They feel that the system is not transparent and
only portrays what is good for the media to broadcast. For instance, the issue of discrimination
against African American citizens demoralizes them since no government seems to listen to their
grievances.
Without doubt, Americans do want a democracy which gives them all rights,
responsibilities, and accountability. Comparing them with dictatorial countries such as Russia,
then they would not wish for their rights to be suppressed by the government (Little, 2017). Even
though there are challenges in implementing entirely American democracy, so far it is ranked
among the best country globally that embrace democracy. Where should democracy start and
what are its limits?
