PPO
HMO
2 Advantages
POS plan gives its
users freedom to
choose their plan. A
patient has the
opportunity to use both
in and out network
doctors.
There are no in-network
deductibles as long as
the patient seek care
from in-network
physician (Kongstvedt,
2019).
There is limit to out-of-
pocket payments which
a patient cannot pass.
POS promises
coverage flexibility
where a patient can
seek patient care from
PPO plans gives the
patient an opportunity to
choose from in or out of
network primary care
physician (Kongstvedt,
2019).
A patient can go and see
a specialist without the
referral of the patient’s
primary doctor. It does
not matter if the specialist
is in or out of network of
the PPO plan
(Kongstvedt, 2019).
PPO is flexible than all
the other plans available
for patients.
In PPO a patient is not
required to choose a
primary care physician.
Less out of pocket
payments to medication
prescription.
Lower monthly premiums
paid and less out of
pocket costs when getting
medical attention
(Kongstvedt, 2019).
It is convenient because
a patient will have a
primary doctor who would
manage the patient’s
healthcare plan.
A patient has the
opportunity to choose the
doctor they would like to
be their primary doctor.

CDHP
PPO
HMO
in and out of network
physician care.
2 Disadvantages
Higher out-of-network
out-of-pockets
payments where a
patient is allowed to see
their doctor even if they
are out-of-network but
the patient will have to
pay for the services
(Kongstvedt, 2019).
POS plan requires one
to have a referral from
the primary physician to
see a specialist.
Members are required
to file for a claim for
reimbursement and they
have to wait for the
approval of the
reimbursement
(Kongstvedt, 2019).
For out-of-patient care a
patient has to pay
upfront to get the
services they need.
PPO has higher monthly
premiums.
Out-of-pocket costs are
very high for PPO plans.
If a patient does not
choose a primary doctor,
they have the
responsibility of
managing their care
(Kongstvedt, 2019).
A patient is required to go
only to the hospitals that
the patient chose for the
insurance plan.
If a patient’s doctor is not
part of the HMO plan,
then the patient has to
look for a new doctor who
is in the HMO plan.
A patient cannot go for
specialist consultation
without the referral of the
patient’s doctor
(Kongstvedt, 2019).
Emergencies must be
first assessed to see if
the emergency can be
covered by the plan and
this may take a while
affecting the care that the
patient gets
(Kongstvedt, 2019).
Describe the
consumer who
would best
benefit from
each type of plan
A consumer whose
physician is not in the
in-network and the
consumer still wants to
see their doctor while at
the same time enjoying
the benefits of getting
free healthcare from an
in-network physician.
A consumer who would
like to have the freedom
of choosing either to go to
an in-network or out-of-
network doctor benefits
from not needing a
referral to see a
specialist.
A consumer who would
like a cheaper plan, like
low-income families, this
is because it is cheaper
and the patient is
guaranteed quality
healthcare.
Part 2: Consumer Impact
Write a 90- to 175-word response to each the following prompts. Consider the information you listed in
the Part 1 Managed Care Advantages and Disadvantages Table, what you know about consumer
behavior, and the importance of innovation in health care in your responses.
1. When choosing the most appropriate managed care health insurance plans, explain the impact
