Introduction
The Need for Nursing Research
Nursing research is essential in the advancement of the nursing practice and in ensuring
the nursing practice is kept updated with the latest practice principles and standards hence the
delivery of better patient care. Therefore, nursing research helps promote information literacy so
that nurses are able to effectively use information derived from research findings in developing
conclusions in their clinical and nursing practice. According to the evidence-based practice
standards, research results play a vital role in informing best practice in the nursing work.
Research is key in the development of the nursing career
Understanding basic research principles is critical for nurses as it helps them to
effectively process and use information provided by evidence-based research results. This
promotes nurses’ information literacy necessary for interpreting data, comparing various studies,
critiquing results, and critically processing the information (Northeastern State University,
2017). The knowledge of basic research principles is thus important in order to help nurses
identify research results that are bias-free, verifiable, reproducible, and compliant with
acceptable nursing principles and standards. This paper is an overview of what nursing research
entails and its significance in making nursing a credible practice.
