It is an incontestable fact that the Vietnam War was, by and large, a disgrace and
insurmountable failure on the part of the United States which is doubtlessly the undisputed
world's military superpower. Kennedy’s main reason for sending military advisers to South
Vietnam was to counteract the spread of the communist ideology which was already rampant in
North Vietnam. The US foreign policy was to ensure they replicate the Korean success story
whereby the United States succeeded in ensuring South Korea did not fall in the hands of
communists( Herring, 2001).
The assassination of Kennedy in November, 23, 1963, ushered in the presidency of the
then vice president Lyndon Johnson. President Johnson wanted to maintain the legacy of
Kennedy in ensuring the US presence in South Vietnam. It is during the first term of Johnson's
presidency that the American military was fully committed to the Vietnam War. This is because
only 100 Americans had been killed and 16,000 troops were committed to Vietnam during
Kennedy's presidency ( Summers, 2009).
Johnson secured a functional declaration of war from the US Congress in 1964. Every US
President regarded the regime in North Vietnam as communist and since the capitalist ideology
was aligned in the foreign policy of the United States, it was obvious that the presence of the
United States in Vietnam acted as a deterrent to the spread of communism. During the Johnson
presidency, so many Americans lost their lives in Vietnam to a point where most political
analysts strongly felt that the war was not sustainable. For instance, in 1968, well over 14,000
