The overall influence of Carl Rogers (2015) tells us that Carl Rogers (1902-1987) was a
psychologist with humanistic characteristic and he was a staunch follower of Abraham Maslow’s
assumption. Rogers held the fact that for any individual to develop or grow they require an
environment that gives them the genuineness, that in itself is the openness and disclosure of self,
they in themselves be regarded as to have unconditional positivity and above all empathy. He
argues that without these fundamental factors, relationship and other traits of personality will not
grow as they ought to. This paper is geared towards discussing the concept of self-actualization
by Carl Rodgers and how it applies to personal self.
Carl Rogers work and philosophy on personality and self-actualization changes my whole
perspective of the way it should treat others and the environment that I should or ought to
provide for them to ensure their growth in terms of relationship and other healthy personalities. If
I apply the belief of self-actualization on other individuals, it can greatly help them in realizing
and achieving their personal goals, wishes and all their desires in life. Rogers has also taught me
as an individual that I owe one motive in life, and that is the habit to self-actualize, which in a
basic sense is to fulfill my potential and aim at realizing the highest level of being human as
much as I can. Carl Rogers’s thoughts have changed the way I feel and act about my
surroundings and those around me.
Rogers did a great job in passing his thoughts across on the ideas of self-actualization. He
holds that for any individual to develop a conducive environment, genuineness and acceptance
must be provided to them. He believes that without such, relationships and other healthy
personalities have no potential to develop and grow as they ought to. Rogers in his research
study made use of observation to draw his conclusion about the human self and how human
beings and individuals need to relate and interact. In his methods of research, Rogers employed
