1. Overview of the program.
A. What is the mission or goal of the program?
The objective of this program is to ensure that school going children from low-income earning
families can access nutritious meals even after closing school.
B. What population(s) are served, and how many?
About 22million children, participate in the National School lunch program, but only 3million
children access the summer feeding sites after schools close.
C. What is the funding source, and how much?
These summer feeding sites get funding from public and private sponsors who fund up to $50
million, non-governmental organizations funding more than $80 million, churches, and
universities which collectively constitute to $45 million. In addition, the government offer more
funds to ensure food availability at a fixed rate.
2. The effectiveness of the program in meeting its goals.
When schools close food insecurity becomes a reality to most school going children, summer
feeding sites have worked to alleviate the nutritional gap and ensure that school going children
access free and at reduced lunches through the summer feeding programs.
3. What is the future of the program threats or opportunities?
Lack of reliable transportation means to the summer feeding sites has barred many families from
utilizing the feeding programs. Additionally, safety has been an issue for the program. Parents
may fear to send children to summer sites in a location where they do not see as safe for their
children.
4. How and why did he/she become interested in working with the program? What
educational / skill sets were needed to work in this program?
She facilitates the program essentially because summer feeding sites give youths an opportunity
to participate in community service. Additionally, organizations can participate by offering
physical activities and learning opportunities and programs at the feeding sites. Furthermore,
