HUMAN IMMUNODEFICIENCY VIRUS DISEASE 2
Human immunodeficiency virus disease
Human immunodeficiency virus is a viral infection primarily driven by sexual contact
among other causes. The disease is prevalent among specific vital populations, but gay people
suffer from the disease the most. Besides, the African Americans are usually affected the most
by HIV across all the critical population's groups. A failure in the use of condoms increases the
risks of the infection. The primary factor to the prevention of the disease is a stigma, which
results in low rates among the people when it comes to HIV testing. About 40 million people
across the world are living with the virus across the world (Hariri & McKenna, 2017). In the
U.S., about 1.2 million people are living with the virus, representing a 2.5 percent global burden.
Contributing factors
Stigmatization is one of the factors that contribute to HIV. Stigma prevents people from
being tested. Failing to know your status increases the chances that you will infect your partner
with the virus. Secondly, drugs use and alcoholism is a contributing factor. The sharing of
injection tools increases the risks of infection. Alcohol users do not usually make wise decisions
regarding sex and may end up having unprotected sex under the influence of alcohol (Hariri &
McKenna, 2017). Thirdly, the ignorance among the people that makes them avoid testing or use
of protection during sex even when they are aware of HIV is another contributing factor to
infection. Promiscuity is also a common contributing factor because engaging in sexual affairs
with more than one partner and practicing prostitution are critical contributors to acquiring
infection.
