COMPARING AND CONTRASTING WHITE PRIVILEGE AND COLORISM 2
Introduction
White privilege refers to the rights enjoyed within the society that only the white people
enjoy more, in comparison to the non-whites, given similar circumstances. There are certain
privileges enjoyed by the whites, that possibly are not oblivious, but the non-whites in the
society do not possess. Also, more preference is directed to white people, which is another
critical aspect of the white privilege. Every other concept about white privilege helps in
analyzing the racism effects on white people's society. Other issues are discussed below.
Body
Being a person of color or a white person, there are various examples through which one
can be denied privilege. Therefore, white privilege experiences very common. For example, it is
easier to blend with other whites, but readings materials such as magazines, which talk more of
the whites and criticize politics and other sensitive issues without being considered as an outcast
or cultural outsider (Rothenberg, 2004). Also, when a white moves to new places, there is a
tendency of people being neutral to such a person and being to him/her.
There are also privileges that can change, according to the social context, primarily as
one move from a particular region or social setting to another. For example, taking into
consideration that NAACP is always against discrimination against people of color, there will be
more privileges to African-Americans to become leaders for NAACP, in comparison with a
white person (Rothenberg, 2004). In such a case scenario, the right and power vested upon being
white changes as the NAACP leaders are supposed to belong to a society that that is colored.
