TOUR OF HUMAN BRAIN 2
To understand the human brain, an informative and guided tour is conducted. This tour
involves the analysis of the brain parts and their functions. The human brain is basically a
command center for the human nervous system. It receives signals from sensory organs of the
body and then output information to the muscles. The main parts of the human include
cerebellum, cerebrum, and brainstem (Mai et al., 2015). The cerebrum is the largest part of the
human brain and it is composed of left and right hemispheres. The two halves or hemispheres are
joined together by the corpus callosum, which is a bundle of fibers. Cerebrum performs critical
functions like hearing, vision, touch, as well as emotions, reasoning, learning, speech, and fine
control of movement, Cerebellum is located under the cerebrum. Its major function includes
maintaining posture, coordinating muscle movements, and balance. In other terms, the
cerebellum plays the critical functions in motor control. It plays an important role in the balance
and coordination of the human body.
Brainstem acts as a relay center connecting the cerebellum and cerebrum to the spinal
cord. Brainstem consists of pons, oblongata, and midbrain. The major functions of brainstem
include relaying information between the body and the brain; supplying cranial nerves to the
head and the face; and performing important functions in controlling consciousness, breathing,
and heart (Penfield, 2015). In other terms, it performs automatic functions such as body
temperature, coughing, heart rate, breathing, swallowing, digestion, and wake and sleep cycles.
Between brainstem and cerebrum lies hypothalamus and thalamus. The thalamus relays mortal
and sensory signals to the cortex and is also involved in regulating alertness, sleep, and
consciousness. The hypothalamus links the nervous system to the endocrine system. The
endocrine system is where there is the production of hormones via the pituitary gland.
