The chosen cultural consideration is gender. Culturally sensitive therapy emphasizes the

need for counselors to understand their patients’ belief systems and backgrounds. Social workers

should integrate cultural sensitivity in their sessions to accommodate and respect differences in

values and opinions of different types of people and cultures. Cultural diversity comprises

various factors that clients bring to therapy and gender is one of the elements that play a vital

role (Passalacqua & Cervantes, 2008). The importance of gender in the counseling process is

recognized because women and men reflect varying differences as mental healthcare users and

presenting issues. It becomes critical for counselors to attend to gender issues and sex

differences to ensure cultural sensitivity. Women and men behave, process, and perceive

differently, and whether the experiences are learned or inherent, gender is one way that people

frame their society and world at large. Passalacqua & Cervantes (2008) explain that therapists'

beliefs on gender affect their approaches when working with women and men clients, regardless

of sexual orientation, and urges social workers to examine their worldview as cultural and
