Academic medical centers and community hospital both serve a vital role in communities
that of providing primary healthcare. What differentiates academic medical centers from
community hospitals is their three-dimensional mission of education, research, and healthcare.
This article seeks to compare these two institutions, by examining one organization under each
category:
Comparing Boston University Medical Campus to South Boston Community Health
Center
The Boston University Medical Campus (BUMC) was set up to offer both education and
healthcare services to the community. The institution has over time developed initiatives whose
main focus is to help high school students make the right career choices in the medical field. It
offers them not only educational opportunities but also a place to practice what they learn, thus
preparing them for field practice.
South Boston Community Health Center was founded in 1972 with the aim of offering
healthcare services to the community at large, especially to those who need specialized care the
most.
Mission
BUMC’s core mission is “training the next generation of physicians, dentists, and scientists.”

South Boston Community Health Center’s mission is “to provide accessible, high-quality care to
all patients, regardless of status and ability to pay.” (SBCHC)
